Fun facts

about working at camp!

Skip the internship, go to camp

Why work at camp?

Regardless of your college major or field of interest, FLJDC experiences allow you to learn and develop skills that will enhance your job marketability.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) surveyed more than 200 employers about their top priorities in new hires. Overwhelmingly, they want candidates who are team players, problem solvers, and can plan, organize, and prioritize their work.

The top 5 skills employers most want in young employees, in order of importance, are:

1. Ability to work in a team

2. Ability to make decisions and solve problems

3. Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work

4. Ability to communicate verbally with people inside and outside an organization

5. Ability to obtain and process information (critical thinking)

Business executives often note that experience as a camp counselor translates into excellent management and personnel skills.

As a staff member at FLJDC you have the opportunity to gain ALL of these skills and more!

  • You will learn the art of communication and how to address different audiences. You will develop appropriate social skills that tap into the needs and expectations of various people while maintaining your confidence and authority.

  • You’ll learn how to negotiate, mediate, and maintain a positive morale.  You will learn time management skills, and how to use creativity to solve problems.

  • You will develop the art of nurturing, gain a high level of responsibility, learn how to role model and be a strong, consistent, yet approachable person.

  • You’ll develop emotional intelligence, learn critical thinking, understand interpersonal dynamics, and how to effectively work in a team. These skills are as important to teachers, nurses and caregivers as they are to business leaders, managers, and executives.

Studies indicate at least 27-45% of your success on any job relates to your ability to use emotional intelligence when relating to others.

No matter what field you plan to go into, it is clear from both research and anecdotal evidence, working at a summer camp will help you gain real world experience and life skills that you will take with you forever and that can translate into a real advantage to you in your job marketability.
